Luke is one of our absolute favourite experts to talk to. He is knowledgable in both fitness and nutrition, but most importantly, he has so many recipes that make healthy cooking, living and eating tasty and fun!
In celebration of Luke’s newest book Smart Carbs, we thought we would call him in for another chat!
Hi Luke, Tell us about what you do?
I am all about helping people through education, resources and motivation to find synergy between the Meals, Mindset and Moves. That means learn how to cook delicious nutrient dense meals, cultivate a realistic and positive mindset and perform the moves each day that keep us well for life. From my latest cookbook Smart Carbs to my immersive online program Luke Hines 10, my passion is reaching as large an audience as possible and empowering them with the knowledge to make long term positive change that leads to health and happiness.
How did you get into it?
Over 10 years as a trainer combined with a successful stint on My Kitchen Rules has certainly got me to doing what I do today, add in my nutritional therapy qualifications, health coaching and 9 cookbooks and you’ve got the recipe for my day to day life!
Greatest achievement or best moment of your career to date?
As an Australian author, I have to say I get pretty chuffed when I see my books hit the top of the official charts ahead of very well known and established international names with a huge celebrity or TV presence. For me, its moments like that when I know what I am doing is making a difference and resonating with people all across Australia and New Zealand.
What is one thing you wish every client would do?
Always remember that no-one else can solve their health and happiness problems for them! And that long term change takes work and commitment… and no matter how hard it can feel at times it is incredibly worth it and the pay off is exceptional.
What are the top issues that you find your clients struggle with?
Navigating their way around all the different opinions, experts and ways to be healthy. I always remind my clients that there is no one-size fits all approach and they need to find what works for them and their lifestyle. That’s why with my book Smart Carbs I break my recipes down into Keto, Low Carb and Paleo, because each person celebrates food in a different way.
Best piece of advice you would give someone when it comes to their health and wellness?
Listen to your body, respect it, and make the right investments to keep it well, both inside and out. Our mental health plays more of a role than many people think, so start with whats inside to make sculpting whats on the outside easier and sustainable.
What tip would you give someone who is looking to get into your industry?
Absolutely follow your dreams! Whether its personal training, working with Angelina Jolie or writing cookbooks, you CAN do it, just make the small incremental steps each day to make it happen.
What does the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I roll out of bed around 4:45am, give my dog Chia about 5 minutes of dedicated cuddles whilst she lays in her little bed next to mine, then I power up my coffee with my MCT Keto Tonic and hit a high intensity cardio session. Once this is done it is still pretty early so open the inbox, get ahead of my work and take in the morning sun as it rises.
What is one unique thing that you do that has changed your life?
The combination of intermittent fasting and replacing a meal with one of my PoweredUp Coffees. To help burn fat and reboot my system I will do small fasts throughout my week, usually around 16 to 18 hours. Other days I replace breakfast with my PowerUp coffee which is a double shot long black, teaspoon of ghee and tablespoon of MCT Keto Tonic. It keeps me feeling satiated, focused and energized all day and sometimes I am not hungry until dinner. Its packed with good healthy fats for optimal brain health and function.
