Former 2016 Survivor Australia Contestant Tegan Haining may have been voted off the island in a blindside at tribal council, but she’s winning at life. The former model turned health coach/author has proven herself globally as a respected fitness and wellbeing expert. She’s trained clients such as David Beckham, Natalie Imbruglia and models, Jessica Gomes and Lara Stone. We were thrilled to be able to catch up with her.
What does the first 90 minutes of your day look like (or, do you have a morning routine)?
I always drink two glasses of water upon rising. And if I have PT clients, I will have a handful of roasted almonds before I get out the door but if I’m at home, its water, breakfast of eggs, avo and tomato plus green tea or coffee if I go out. Then I like to get 60 mins of writing or reading done before heading off to workout myself.
What is your day on a plate for a normal day?
I always eat a lot of healthy fats—avocado, nuts, olive oil, with every meal—breakfast would be avocado with eggs or maybe a protein shake and I put the avo in there too! Snacking on nuts all the time, but I like roasted ones, never raw. I always have protein, so chicken, steak and healthily sourced sausages are favourites. Dinner is veggies and meat, but I do love me a good spaghetti bolognese!
Do you have any health philosophies that you live by?
I’m not afraid of eating carbs. In fact, I like to make sure I eat them daily in some form. I always eat a lot of fat and protein, and sugar is the one thing I love but I avoid more for health reasons than for weight issues. Sugar causing overgrowth of bad bacteria and fungus in the body which is very detrimental to overall energy, health and wellbeing.
What are your top health spots near home?
Favourite cheat meal?
Burgers, I LOVE a good burger.
What is the best health treatment you have ever had and why?
Seeing my Naturopath. He’s a guru, honestly looks in my eyes (iridology) and picks out everything that isn’t working in my body, its unbelievable.
Best workout you have ever done and why did you love it?
This varies for me, sometimes its yoga but at the moment I’m loving the group training at Befit in
Do you have a hack to help you with stress?
When I’m stressed I get out of my house or wherever I am and go for brisk walk for at least 40 minutes— it always includes some challenging hills—and by the time you get a light sweat on, you find that the problem whatever it is doesn’t seem so bad anymore.
What’s one thing people probably don’t know about you?
I was a model for 17 years…where did that time go?
The last book you read?
The Diet Myth by Tim Spector
How do you unwind?
I love Netflix, I know you’re not supposed to say TV, but i love it for switching off the mind..
Greatest achievement or best moment of your career to date?
Hmmm probably training David Beckham for a year…not too bad on the eyes
What is one thing you wish every client would do?
Realise that they have to commit to the food part too, not just think that they can eat anything because they came to me to train for an hour.
What are the top issues that you find your clients struggle with?
Knowing what to eat that sits under the healthy wholefoods guidelines. It’s really hard for people who don’t come from a nutrition or foodie background to have any idea what foods have bad sugars and bad fats in them. Also overtraining is a big issue. Training more does not always mean that you are losing more weight or that you will outrun your troubles.
Best piece of advice you would give someone when it comes to their health and wellness?
Less is more. Don’t try and do everything at once, willpower always fails! Try to implement small changes week by week to help make them stick for life.
What tip would you give someone who is looking to get into your industry?
Get your certification and then never stop reading, attending courses and asking questions. There is so much to learn in this industry and the more you know and the more humble you are, the better respected you will be by both clients and your peers.
